The backstory

Published by jensplace under Uncategorized Edit This

If you’ve read this blog from the beginning (all of 2 days, ha!), then you know my son, B, started a new day care this week.  This post will tell the story of why.

B has a difficult time in day care.  His moderate to severe autism makes finding a care provider a bit of a challenge.  He’s been in many different care providers over the years, and he started his most recent day care back in March, when his private nanny quit due to a promotion in her other job.  This center was kind of rundown looking and the director/owner had an abrupt manner with adults, but she came highly recommended by some other special needs parents I know, and she was willing to take B, so I tried it.

Much to my surprise, he did really well at this center.  I had concerns about the lack of structure, as the students have free choice about which activity and room they visit.  I think the best part for B was the large indoor playground–he could get out his wiggles even in bad weather.

He quickly became attached to one teacher, Ms. Becky.  He loved her and she spent lots of time with him as well.  Last Tuesday morning, she called me.  This was surprising, as B was not at day care on Tuesday–he was at his father’s house.  She asked me if I had been by the center yet.  I had not, as I had no reason to go, and she then told me it had closed without warning.  According to her, the employees were owed money and the owner/director had not told anyone about any financial struggles.  Just like that, I had no child care.

I did drive by later in the week, just to be sure it wasn’t a disgruntled employee or something, and sure enough, the place was closed and there were “For Lease” signs on the doors.  I am extremely glad Ms. Becky called me, because I would not have driven by the center at all before I started back to work Monday morning.  I cannot imagine how freaked I would have been to show up at day care Monday morning (teacher inservice day) to find locked doors and no options on a work day.

B and I spent the rest of Tuesday interviewing day care centers and found the one he started this week.  He had a good day today as well, so here’s hoping that continues!
